JAFZA Logistics & Sea Cargo

How a startup founder moved from a costly “JAFZA is mandatory” assumption to a leaner operating model built around the actual cargo flow, warehousing needs, tax position and budget.

CLIENT REQUIREMENT

Launch a Dubai logistics business connected to Jebel Ali Port and understand where the company should be incorporated, how cargo would be received and where goods could be stored.

CHALLENGE

The client believed the company had to sit in JAFZA, that JAFZA automatically meant 0% tax and that goods had to remain there to avoid customs exposure — assumptions that made the startup look unaffordable.

SOLUTION

We separated licence location from cargo operations, clarified Corporate Tax versus VAT, mapped customs and warehousing routes, then designed a lower-cost jurisdiction while preserving the required logistics flow.

WHY VANTABLACK

The decisive value was operational detail. We answered the questions that appear after incorporation — port handling, warehousing, customs and tax treatment — so the client could launch a business that actually works.

Why this use case matters.

A company setup adviser could have stopped at “JAFZA is expensive.” The real advisory work was understanding the founder’s motive, then solving every operational fear underneath it: where cargo enters, where it can be stored, how customs treatment works, how VAT differs from Corporate Tax, and whether the startup can afford the structure. That is the difference between issuing a licence and designing a business that can operate.

Regulatory note: 0% Free Zone Corporate Tax is conditional and VAT/customs treatment depends on the exact transaction, qualifying conditions, designated-zone rules and movement of goods. Current FTA, customs and free-zone requirements must be revalidated for each live structure. *The ~1/20 comparison refers to the actual source-case alternatives considered for this client, not a universal JAFZA price comparison.
